Not long after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, author Stephen Lyons wrote the following essay, describing the day as it unfolded. His essay originally appeared in the November 2001 issue of "The Sun" magazine. Lyons is a two-time recipient of an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship for prose writing. He is the author of three books, most recently, "The 1,000-Year Flood: Destruction, Loss, Rescue, and Redemption along the Mississippi River."
