His essay originally appeared in the November 2001 issue of "The Sun" magazine. Lyons is a two-time recipient of an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship for prose writing. He is the author of three books, most recently, "The 1,000-Year Flood: Destruction, Loss, Rescue, and Redemption along the Mississippi River."
