SmileHealthy
Serving the greater Champaign area, Smilehealthy focuses on preventive care, treatment, and education to provide a lifetime of excellent oral health. SmileHealthy currently operates five programs:
1) The Frances Nelson Dental Clinic is the newest work-in-progress that will function as a local community health center due to open later this year. The clinic is planned to provide general preventative and restorative services to about half adults and half children currently underserved for dental care – 6240 dental visits per year.
2) The Head Start Dental Clinics offer free care to children enrolled in Head Start as well as to their family members. The clinic serves over 650 enrolled children a year and nearly 250 family members.
3) At the Mobile Dental Clinics, staff and volunteer dentists assist with screenings and exams while our hygienists provide cleanings, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants in area schools, preschools, churches, and community centers.
4) The Child Dental Access Program (CDAP) delivers a wide spectrum of dental care ranging from prevention to specialty dental care and oral surgery to children. These patients are of low income families who live in Champaign County but outside Champaign-Urbana at participating dentist offices.
Finally, 5) the Dental Health Education Program coordinates full school assemblies on oral health care, monthly classroom education, organizing an educational outreach program to daycare providers and other smaller groups.
Studies have shown that oral health is a gateway into people’s overall health. Low maintenance of oral health is not only linked to tooth decay and bad breath, but research also finds a strong correlation to heart disease, premature births, brain tumors, and diabetes. SmileHealthy is devoted to the health of Champaign-Urbana residents by ensuring that patients receive quality care in order to improve their entire well-being.
