C-U Public Health District’s CATCH Program
The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (C-UPHD) supports schools interested in implementing the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) program. CATCH strives to get children moving and eating right through 4 components: Health Education, CATCH PE, Home Team (activities with families), and school nutrition. During a full day of training, School staff members receive a full day of curriculum training, and then are supported as they implement the program. Food service workers become involved as the program strives to change lunch menus and offer healthier choices.
Five schools in Champaign County currently participate in CATCH: Carrie Busey, Unity West, Thomasboro, Dr. Howard and Fisher Grade School. Structured physical activities are offered at recess, and other activities such as “Moving Mondays” and “Fitness Fridays” support the CATCH philosophy. 3 of the 5 CATCH schools participate in a mileage program that encourages kids to walk during recess.
